Background of the study
Traditional medicine remains a central component of healthcare in many Nigerian communities, including Akoko South-West Local Government Area. Deeply rooted in cultural heritage, traditional remedies and healing practices influence how residents perceive and seek healthcare. Many individuals rely on indigenous knowledge and herbal treatments as their first line of defense against illnesses (Afolabi, 2023). This preference, while offering culturally resonant care, may delay the utilization of modern medical services, potentially compromising treatment outcomes. Recent studies indicate that the integration of traditional and modern healthcare systems could improve overall health service delivery by bridging gaps between cultural practices and clinical efficacy (Olatunji, 2024). Furthermore, understanding the factors that drive the reliance on traditional medicine is essential for developing public health strategies that respect cultural values while promoting timely access to evidence-based treatments (Adejumo, 2025).

Statement of the problem
In Akoko South-West, heavy reliance on traditional medicine has led to delays in seeking modern healthcare services, which may result in worsened health outcomes. Cultural adherence to indigenous healing practices, combined with limited access to formal medical facilities, creates challenges in the timely diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This situation necessitates a comprehensive investigation into how traditional medicine influences healthcare-seeking behavior and what measures can integrate beneficial aspects of both traditional and modern practices (Afolabi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of traditional medicine on healthcare-seeking behavior.

  2. To identify factors driving reliance on traditional remedies.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating traditional and modern healthcare systems.

Research questions:

  1. How does traditional medicine affect healthcare-seeking behavior in Akoko South-West?

  2. What factors contribute to the preference for traditional remedies?

  3. What measures can promote timely access to modern healthcare?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional medicine significantly influences healthcare-seeking behavior.

  2. Cultural beliefs are a primary driver for reliance on traditional remedies.

  3. Integrative healthcare approaches can improve overall treatment outcomes.

Significance of the study
The study provides critical insights into the impact of traditional medicine on health-seeking behavior, guiding policymakers to develop integrative health strategies that respect cultural practices while ensuring access to modern medical care. This approach aims to improve overall health outcomes in Akoko South-West.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the effect of traditional medicine on healthcare-seeking behavior in Akoko South-West Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Traditional Medicine: Indigenous health practices and remedies passed through generations.

  2. Healthcare-Seeking Behavior: The process by which individuals seek medical care.

  3. Integrative Healthcare: Combining traditional and modern medical practices.
